Over 14,000 miles of Groomed Trails
Looking for places to stay when snowmobiling in Maine? Maine has a network of over 14,000 miles of groomed snowmobile trails throughout the state, making it the 4th largest trail system in the United States! Of those miles, 4,000 are part of the Interconnected Trail System (ITS) which connects every region of the state. Maine’s hardworking snowmobile clubs maintain the trails and include signs to fuel, food, and lodging as well.
Snowmobile for Free Weekend
In January 2018 the state of Maine will offer the first free snowmobiling weekend for non-residents. This means folks who don’t live in Maine won’t have to register their sled if snowmobiling in Maine between January 26-28, 2018, as long as it is already registered in their home state or province. In previous years Maine participated in a Reciprocal Snowmobile Weekend with New Hampshire and Vermont, with each state allowing residents of the other two states to snowmobile for one weekend without registering in the neighboring states. This year New Hampshire and Vermont are still offering Maine residents with registered snowmobiles the opportunity to snowmobile without registration the same weekend. Here is information about New Hampshire’s Reciprocal Snowmobile Weekend and information about Vermont’s snowmobile laws.
Help Keep Maine’s Snowmobile Trails Open
Maine’s snowmobile trails are only possible through partnerships between the Maine Snowmobile Association and Maine landowners. Over 95% of Maine’s trails are on privately owned lands. To keep these trails open for future use please stay on marked trails and carry out all litter. Logging operations continue through the winter months, with many trails in logging territory. Stay on marked trails and don’t travel on plowed roads unless they are part of the marked trail. These trails are often rerouted due to logging operations. Contact local snowmobile clubs for updated trail condition reports.
Above all stay safe and enjoy the ride!
